How to prepare for the TMUA — a teacher's guide to the maths admissions test

The TMUA (Test of Mathematics for University Admission) is used by Cambridge and a growing list of universities (Warwick, Durham, LSE, Bath and others) to assess mathematical thinking beyond A-Level. A strong TMUA score can lower an offer or strengthen an application. Crucially, it tests something A-Level barely touches: mathematical reasoning and logic. Here's how to prepare.

What the TMUA is

The two papers, and why Paper 2 is the differentiator

  • Paper 1 — Applications. Familiar A-Level (AS-level) content — algebra, functions, sequences, trigonometry, differentiation, integration, logarithms, graphs — applied quickly and without a calculator. Speed and clean technique matter.
  • Paper 2 — Mathematical Reasoning. This is what makes the TMUA distinctive. It tests logic and proof: following and evaluating chains of reasoning, the language of necessary and sufficient, converse and contrapositive, identifying the flaw in a proof, choosing valid deductions, and reasoning about counterexamples. Most students have never been taught this explicitly — so it's where preparation pays off most.

The skills it rewards

  1. Fast, accurate, non-calculator algebra and manipulation.
  2. Logical literacy — "if and only if," necessary vs sufficient, negation, contrapositive.
  3. Proof comprehension — reading an argument and judging whether each step is valid.
  4. Error-spotting — finding the single invalid line in a plausible-looking proof.
  5. Smart multiple-choice strategy — using structure and elimination, not brute force.

How to prepare

  1. Sharpen Paper 1 fundamentals first. Drill AS-level technique to automaticity, all without a calculator.
  2. Learn formal reasoning explicitly. Study logical connectives, quantifiers, and the standard proof forms (direct, contrapositive, contradiction, induction, counterexample) — then practise judging arguments, not just producing answers.
  3. Practise spotting flawed proofs. Train yourself to ask of every line: does this actually follow, and why?
  4. Do timed past papers. With ~3.5 minutes per question and no calculator, pacing and mental arithmetic are part of the skill.
  5. Review every wrong answer by the type of reasoning error you made — that's the fastest route to a higher band.

Common pitfalls

  • Treating it like an A-Level paper and ignoring Paper 2's reasoning — the part you can improve most.
  • Confusing necessary and sufficient, or a statement with its converse.
  • Calculator dependence — rebuild non-calculator fluency early.
  • Brute-forcing multiple choice instead of reasoning to the answer.
